A perfect blend of art, history and culture

Dear Editor, Kudos and many thanks to Ginger Snip and Ann Kennedy of Needle Rock Fiber Arts for bringing a fabulous Navajo Spinning class to Telluride. Even as a weaver trained in the Rio Grande tradition, rarely have I experienced such a perfect blend of artistic expression, rich history and cultural immersion. Pam Ramsey, owner of La Plata Farms in Hesperus, was our teacher extraordinaire. Pam raises Churro sheep and began the class with a rich oral history of this hardy breed brought to the Southwest by the Spanish settlers in the 16th century. Churro sheep became a mainstay of the Navajo culture, both for food and their fiber, and remain so today. After being brought to the edge of extinction several times, Navajo Churro sheep have made yet another comeback and are a favorite among many fiber artists for their fine, creamy wool.

March is National Crochet Month!

Our customer, Jennifer, let us know that this is National Crochet Month & we've decided to acknowledge it by asking our followers to crochet up a 6" square, in any yarn, any stitch pattern. This could either be a granny square, crocheted from the center out, or a 6" swatch of double crochet. Ginger knit, then felted this fantastic hobby horse for her granddaughter, Maddie. Our resident expert on all-things equine did a fantastically realistic job on head, reins, & ears. This is an heirloom toy that will last generations. Granddad Bob looks on approvingly!

Sublime Cowl

Local Telluride school teacher, Karen Ludwig treated herself to a completed knitted item from Needle Rock. This deliciously soft cowl was knit by Ginger in Sublime, a wooly merino boucle. The cowl can either be worn down, as shown, or pulled up over the head, when our spring winds kick up.

What is your fiber status? Have you spent long hours knitting some luscious yarn? Are you wearing some of your handknits or did you give them all away? What will 2011 bring to your knitting world? Don’t know? We have some ideas!
LoneSome Stone, a wonderful Colorado fiber mill, is still producing gorgeous yarns of alpaca, merino and superwash merino. We have new colors of the “Twist & Shout” which is 100% worsted weight alpaca in a two color twist. My favorite is a red and dark brown twist called “Bright Red over Colorado Fudge”!
We also have new colors of Mountain Feat from LoneSome Stone which is variegated sock yarn of 100% superwash merino….gorgeous!
Mountain Colors is dying fabulous yarns of several fibers. The Merino Ribbon is very popular for scarves and shawls. It knits like merino but looks a little like chenille with its velvety finish. At 245 yards per skein, it is plenty for your next project. Our favorite color is hummingbird which is lovely blues and magentas….yum!
And, of course, the Multi-Fiber Throw Kit from Mountain Colors is almost too pretty to describe. It is an easy and quick knit on size 11 needles. It’ll look great on your sofa.
We have a new shipment of dyed mohair from New York State. Our new colors include cotton candy pink, royal blue, lavender, olive green, periwinkle, rust and, of course, ginger. We skein them up ourselves saving you mucho. How about a cozy cardigan in mohair? We can help you with a pattern built especially to your specifications.

Navajo Spinning and Carding
We have a very exciting workshop planned for March. Pam Ramsey from La Plata Farms in Hesperus, Colorado, will teach a one-day workshop on Navajo spinning and carding. Pam is an expert in Navajo-Churro Sheep and has been instrumental in re-vitalizing the breed in our region. The workshop will be Sunday, March 13th, and there will be spindles to borrow and fiber will be provided. She will also be bringing handmade spindles, handcards and roving to sell. Students are encouraged to bring a sack lunch and Needle Rock will be providing beverages. The cost of the workshop is $65, and space is limited so we will be requiring a deposit to hold your space. Please call us to reserve your spot.

Third Annual “Knit on the Mountain” Day! Keep posted for the date in March when we sit around the firepit and stitch together. Too Fun!!!
February Calendar of Events
Wednesday, Feb 9, 16, 23, 4-6pm: Beginning Knitting. We are now holding regular classes on Wednesday for Beginning Knitters. Basic knitting skills will be taught with no prerequisite skills necessary. $25 for the two hour class plus supplies.
Friday, Feb 11, 18, 25, 11-1pm: Open Knitting Circle. Join us in our informal knitting circle held every Friday during lunch time. Free.
Sunday, Feb 13, Noon to 5pm: Knit Fix. Bring in your problem knitting and let’s figure it out and get you back in gear. Free.
Thursday, Feb 17th, 4-6pm and Sunday, Feb 20th, 12-5pm: Snowboarder Knit Hat Class. This two part class will help you make a cool hat for your favorite boarder. Several techniques will be explored, and you should be able to complete the hat by Sunday afternoon. $25 for both days plus supplies.
EVERY TUESDAY, 7-9pm: Knit Nite. You have no idea (nor do we) what the topic of conversation will include as we stitch together. Free and Fun.

We have many patterns and books and are even dreaming up things on our own. We will have Sock Class every Thursday from 4-6pm for $10 per session. Sign up for one or all classes as you need. We will be keeping a tally of how many socks are knit this month, so be sure to keep us up to date with your progress. Greetings to all our fiber enthusiastic friends,

As I title this newsletter, I am astounded that it IS the holiday season of 2010. This was a fast year with many things happening at Needle Rock. The most significant, of course, is the move to our beloved purple house. We initiated the yard for our first Christmas here with the Pinon Wood Alpacas, Dorian Gray and Nomad. They drew quite a crowd of kids of all ages. Peg and Woody were so gracious to drive the guys up here to help us celebrate Noel Night with truly local fiber donors.

While we are on the topic of the holidays, our shop will be open Sunday through Friday plus Saturday, December 18^th. We will be open from 11-6pm during the week and 12-5 on the weekends. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve we will close at 4pm after hours of cheer and refreshments. We only have a couple of classes scheduled, but are more than happy to schedule a class that you need. Just give us a ring.

Friday, Dec. 10^th, 3-5pm: Double Knit Scarflet. Here is a quick project for a neck-hugging scarf of chunky yarn. You will learn ribbing, increasing, decreasing and double knitting. $10

Sunday, Dec. 12^th, 2-4pm: Chunky Neck Cozy. Another quick gift that can be finished in hours. Techniques offered are increases, decreases and the fan stitch. $10

Tuesday, Dec 14^th, 7-9pm: Knit Nite Sockarama. Wear the socks you knitted to our regular Tuesday night gathering.

Wednesday, Dec. 15^th: Buffalo Gold Trunk Show. We’ll welcome the World Cup Snowboarders with this show of premium American-made yarns. So light that you barely notice you are wearing it, bison fiber has no lanolin or external body oils, and it is a solid protein fiber that can take years of wear with easy care. Grown to survive the coldest blizzrds, bison down performs the best at trapping our own body heat, just as it does for the bison. The show will include yarn and ready-made garments.

Monday, Dec. 27^th, 3-5pm: Mom & Me Class. Learn to knit with your child in this fun winter “sport”. We’ll teach you all the basics. $35 for adult and child (of any age).

Wednesday, Dec. 29^th, 4-6pm: Beginning Knitting. Everything you need to know to knit a wonderful scarf. $25

Seeing it on the New Sheridan's runway (aka: the bar) was beyond beyondo! Telluride's volunteer firemen were called into service as models & did not disappoint. Supermodel, Steve, is shown modeling, "Steve" a hat pattern from the Mirasol Project. I admit to buying this yarn @ another LYS & I'm so glad I did. The cable rib provides a snug fit & the pompom makes the flop over - this pattern would work well in any densely variegated yarn - I definitely plan to make it again.

We love Cath Jett in this ever-so bright yellow shrug. Another Mirasol yarn used with an overall lace pattern & sleeves to hold the whole thing in place. Perfect for our cooler Fall nights or any summer night in Telluride, eh?

No denying it now, autumn is here in the mountains. The tundra is golden brown and the aspens are starting to turn. Our local knitters are waking up to knitting time as they come in from the outdoors. We have had a wonderful summer season with festivarians of all types and many visitors from our own state of Colorado. We are settled in our purple house and have had rave reviews on our new space and our darling front yard. Thank you to all of you who’ve visited our newest location.
We have many new yarns to show you as well as some kits and accessories. The Fibre Company is a wonderful producer from New England with scrumptious yarns. Road to China in dk and worsted is a blend of baby alpaca, cashmere, camel and silk. You have to feel it to believe it and the colors are just as rich and soft. Canopy is a worsted weight baby alpaca, merino, and bamboo which is a dream to knit. Terra is almost tweedy in baby alpaca, wool, and silk with 98 yards per 50 grams. Come check out these new yarns and patterns from The Fibre Company which are adorable.
LoneSome Stone has some new blends that are really beautiful! The Alpaca/merino is a three ply worsted in twists of cream and black, grey and cream, brown and cream and brown and black as well as other combos. You will love it.
Do any of you remember Bristol Yarn Gallery’s Lafayette? It’s a gorgeous brushed suri alpaca in three great colors…powder blue, light green and soft aqua. It’s a really special yarn. We also have more of the SWTC Yang which is wool, silk and bamboo with SEQUINS! We have three colors: scarlet, denim and light taupe.
Have you tried Crystal Palace’s Mochi Plus? It’s a great “slow-striping” yarn which is great for any scarf or hat and beautiful in entrelac. We have 8 great color combinations!
We also have many new books and patterns to peruse. We’ve been showcasing Pagewood Farm’s yarns and kits. Their needle-felted silk scarf kit is fabulous, fast and easy. It’s a great fiber project for those who don’t knit or crochet. It’s soooooo easy and produces a really pretty scarf with plenty of embellishment left over for other projects.
Do you need a gift for a fellow knitter? Not sure what yarn to buy? We’ve taken on the Knit Happy line of colorful mugs, cool notebooks for knitting notes, sticky note organizer & their very clever Fold ‘n Go knitting accessory pouch, as well as a dynamite folding project “box”.

We hope this finds you well and deeply involved in a number of projects involving yarn. Of course, we are in the middle of several, like…
A knitted market bag…a cashmere/lace mohair scarf….sling purses with beaded trim…. a felted stick-horse head…a completed pair of socks!

Things are hoppin’ here in the purple house. We are loving our kitchen to make cookies and punch for Fun Fridays. Our project table is small, but works beautifully for lessons and knitting circles. The pink flamingoes are happy in their front yard with the FLOWER BED.

We have new fun yarns from Pagewood Farms with felted flowers, yarn bouquets and “fuzzy purls”. Each skein can be knit or crocheted into a fabulous scarf in less than two hours! We also have kits from Pagewood Farms for needle felting silk scarfs or unique embellished yarn. Needle felting is fun, fast and really easy for one-of-a-kind garments and accessories. Sheelagh's placemats & table runner

Photos of the yarns, one of the placemats, our weaving open house, one of our weavers with the finished product. A hugely satisfying project! Most of the participants had never touched a loom before but they all did a great job after a five minute demonstration. The recipients were, of course, absolutely blown away by the concept and the results.

Note: These woven items were made with so much love & Colorado fiber for a family that had to move from the area - what great friends they have to do such a project for them!

The Story of Natuarlly Colored Cotton
There is a theory that cotton grew in many different colors before the industrial revolution. However only white cotton had fibers long enough to be spun by machines. As a result, white cotton was grown commercially for the emerging industrial markets and the other colors of cotton either died out or were kept alive by hand spinners as part of a residual cottage industry.

In the late 1960’s Sally Fox began cross breeding brown cotton – considered a weed by “white cotton” growers – in an effort to develop a long fibered colored cotton that could be spun commercially. This cross breeding exposed a recessive gene for green, which Sally stabilized, and in turn cross bred to produce a long fibered green cotton.

Initally, this naturally colored cotton was grown conventionally – with chemical pesticides, fertilizers and defoliants. However, as demand grew, farms were contracted to grow naturally colored cotton, organically.

Unfortunately, by the mid-1990s organic cotton initiatives by various US mills had not reached the “critical mass” needed to be commercially viable, so the growing and processing of organic cotton was sourced primarily to third world countries. Still we are indebted to the many US companies that began the journey to move a major component of the textile industry - cotton - to the stage of being chemically-free. In addition to Sally Fox's company - Naturally Coloured Cotton, brands such as Patagonia and Levi Strauss, to name a few, endured huge losses, in their efforts to bring the concept of chemically free fiber to the public's attention.

We are there now. Organic cotton is a household word. In some cases we have added color for those that need it; but for the purists, there is natuarally colored brown and green cotton.

Teens & Tweens is a new book @ Needle Rock from one of our favorite pattern providers, Cabin Fever in Canada. Sure it's fun & quick to knit for the wee ones, but they do tend to grow up (not unlike kittens) and this collection has some stylish ideas for the oh-so fashion conscious younger set.

The Telluride Balloon Festival had 2 beautiful mornings to launch their unique hot air baskets (a fiberart!) Gus & Ann took it all in on Saturday morning & shot the photos on Sunday, in pj's from our deck.

OK, I should never have said that I was done with double pointed needles! In fact, I really should know better than to make any absolute statement about anything!
As I was packing for our weekend in New York, I decided not to take my big knitting project on the plane and was looking for a small one at home. I found the cute kit I bought in Pagosa Springs of alpaca and mohair socks...perfect traveling project...except for the fact that I did not have #5 circular needles ...only DPN's. Oy veh. I resignedly put them in the kit and drove to Montrose.
Well, what do you know? The Brittany birch double pointed needles are perfect for this yarn and very nice to work with. It may even be a tiny bit faster than the Magic Loop..certainly the repositioning of stitches for the heel was easier and faster. I ENJOYED knitting with them and already finished sock #1. I've now started the second and will have plenty of time to knit it due to the horrible weather which has delayed our take-off from LaGuardia at least an hour and a half.

Greetings People of the Yarn!
We would like to wish you a happy spring, but winter is refusing to leave the Telluride Valley. We had snow and sleet this morning. Oh well, knitting wool still is cozy.
In case you have not heard, Needle Rock has a new home…a real home this time. We moved across the street to 320 W. Colorado: the little purple house. Built in 1883, this cottage is perfectly suited to a yarn shop, and actually has a “fiber and craft” history. We‘ve heard from various old-timers about its occupants in the last hundred or so years, and would love to gather more stories. So, if you know something of our little house’s history, please share.

At any rate, we are moved and getting settled in our new(and permanent) abode. We have room for our circle in the red kitchen, a washer/dryer for blocking and felting, front yard for outdoor sitting and a special room for baby and children’s patterns and yarns. We will continue to offer classes and special events and hope you will make our home your knitting salon on Main Street, Telluride.

Baskets of Africa have arrived for the summer with new styles and colors. Don’t forget them as you are gift shopping this summer.

In addition, we have new yarns to tell you about:
Elsebeth Lavold’s Silky Wool is a beautiful wool, silk and nylon blend in soft “heathery” colors. It is made in Italy and knits to a gauge of 5.5 st/in on #6 needles. The pattern book is fabulous and is on its way as we speak. We are carrying 8 colors in this wonderful yarn.
New by Elsebeth Lavold is Cool Wool, a lovely 50/50 wool/cotton blend in striking colors perfect for kids’ knits. It knits 5 st/in on #5 needles and has wonderful patterns designed for it. We’ve got 12 vibrant colors to share with you. You will love it!
Two other yarns in “Maddie’s Room”, our baby/children’s room, are Cotton Candy and Cuddly Cotton. The Cotton Candy is muted pastels with white in a lovely, soft yarn (100% cotton) which has a darling Jenny Watson pattern book written just for it. The gauge is 5.5 st/in on a #5 with 120 yards per 50g ball. Cuddly Cotton with 202 yds per 100g ball also has its own Jenny Watson pattern book and is 100% cotton. We carry 7 colors it.
Canela by Ester Bitran is her newest Handdyed yarn. It is made in Chile of rayon, acrylic and cotton blended beautifully together in a small “thick and thin wrapped yarn. You have to see it! There are 348 yards in the 100g skein, and the patterns in the Jenny Watson book are unique and flattering.

Classes and Special Events
Tibetan Yaks!!! Our good friend and fellow knitter/weaver, Patti McNall, is bringing her Tibetan Yaks to Needle Rock on Saturday, May 29th for our own Mountain Film celebration. Come see these beautiful and gentle beasts and learn about their fabulous fiber. We hope they are here all afternoon.
Wednesday, June 2, 4-6pm: Baby Hat Class. Learn to knit in the round, decrease and create a quick gift for your baby or someone else’s. Knowledge of cast-on’s, knit and purl are the prerequisite. $15
Monday, June 7, 4-6pm: Beginning Knitting. The class for the “never-ever” to learn all the techniques necessary to knit a beautiful scarf. $25
Wednesday, June 9 and Thursday, June 10, 4-6pm: Market Bag workshop. We will create an indispensable crochet market bag to carry throughout the summer. $25 for this two day workshop.
Monday, June 14, 5-7pm: Beginning Crochet with Janet. Our resident guru will expertly guide you into the world of crochet. $25
Monday, June 21, 4-6pm: Another opportunity for Beginning Knitting. $25
Wednesday, June 23 and Thursday, June 24th, 4-6pm. Top-Down Baby Sweater. The quick, no-sew method for knitting sweaters is perfect for baby gifts. You’ll love this technique as much as we do. $25 for the two day workshop.
Friday, June 25, 3-6pm: Our first ever Fun Friday!!! Join us for refreshments and surprises as we celebrate summer Fridays at Needle Rock.
Monday, June 28, 5-7pm: Tunisian Crochet. Guru Janet will teach us all this unique crochet technique which produces a fabric that almost looks woven. $15
Wednesday, June 30 and Thursday, July 1, 4-6pm: Entrelac. We are hooked on this interesting knitting technique and want you to be, too. $25 for the two day workshop.

Sock Central + The Baby Grande wall

What was once a bedroom is now host to the Mirasol wall, with all the Miski (baby llama), the Sulka (Alpaca, wool & silk), the K'acha (Merino, Suri Alpaca & silk) & our newest Mirasol line, Nuna (Merino, Silk & Bamboo) - looks bit like candy, eh?
